Recently I had the displeasure of watching VH1’s 25 Greatest Commericals. Though it’s great to see a clip show about commericals, I can’t say I was pleased with the choices.
The one that upset me most was the Budweiser “Whazzup” commercial. Sure the catchphrase entered everyone’s lexicon, but Budweiser sales fell. Sure it was amusing, but it’s efforts to be a man’s beer only made it target for ridicule by showcasing stupidity.
“Whazzup” won tons of awards, but like I said Budweiser sales fell. The problem with this ad, and many others on the VH1 list, is they are very creative but do little in the way of producing sales. Why should the novelty of an ad be more important than it’s sales potential?
